Beans for freddo espresso: what matters

By FREDDO ·

For a freddo espresso you need bold espresso beans with a medium-dark to dark roast that build a dense, pale foam when shaken with ice and do not taste sour when cold. Ideally you buy whole beans and grind 18 g fresh for each double espresso. FREDDO is made exactly for this: 100% Arabica, roasted in Italy, medium-dark.

Had one on holiday in Greece or Cyprus? Make it at home: FREDDO Espresso, 1 kg for €29, €0.52 per freddo.

What matters for a freddo

The glass holds only espresso and ice, so every weakness of the bean shows at once. Three things count: a roast that does not turn sour when cold, enough body for the foam, and freshness. A light roast quickly tastes sharp with ice, a very dark one turns bitter. The middle ground, medium-dark, gives chocolate and caramel notes and holds the foam.

Arabica or Robusta

Arabica tastes rounder and sweeter, with gentle acidity. Robusta brings more caffeine, more bitterness and a thicker crema. For a freddo without harsh bitterness that tastes good even without sugar, pure Arabica is the safe choice. If you drink your freddo glykos, sweet, a stronger blend works too.

Grind whole beans fresh

Ground coffee loses its aroma within days; whole beans keep it much longer. Grind fine for an espresso machine and a little coarser for a moka pot. For a freddo espresso, pull a 60 ml double espresso from 18 g of coffee, shake it with 3 to 4 ice cubes for 10 seconds and pour it over fresh ice.

How to spot good beans for a freddo

  • Roast stated as medium-dark to dark.
  • Arabica share named on the pack.
  • Whole beans in a bag with an aroma valve.
  • Compare the price per kilo, not per pack.
  • Roasted for espresso, not for filter coffee.

What a freddo costs at home

With FREDDO a freddo espresso costs €0.52 at home: 18 g of coffee at €29.00 per kilo, about 55 freddos per bag. In a café the same freddo costs a median of €2.50, as our Freddo Price Index of 442 café prices shows.
